My nr. 1 lesson from finishing an EP called “On My Own” is that I am going to attempt to do a bit less On My Own for the next one 😉
5 years ago I was in a rehearsal room trying to explain to my band members that I wanted to do “something electronic”. Um yeah, that’s broad!
Determined to figure out what that “something electronic” meant I retreated back into my song cave for a few years to develop my sound alone and learn as much about producing as I could.
After flirting with vocal Deep House for a while I went back to my more Downtempo, Indie R&B infused, but still Electronic roots. And, I picked up a ton of producing skills that go far beyond just singing and playing with chords, which it still was back then.
The other day I was talking to another vocalist about how incredibly useful and important it is to be able to produce your own music as a singer. At least to a certain extent so you can bring your artistic vision across to whoever you’re working with and have control over where your music career is going.
At the same time, I also now embrace the idea that that doesn’t mean I have to be able to do errrrrrrrything alone. (Any other Type A personalities here that need to hear this? 😁)
In fact, I could never have gotten these tracks to the finishing stage without my friend Hoopski who gave me creative feedback, made tons of subtle improvements, mixed the tunes as well as reminded me several times to stop obsessing about irrelevant details!
And for the next one, I’m going to be open to bringing even more other musicians in, in earlier stages.
Just because one lifetime is too damn short to become great at beat making, songwriting, arranging, producing, singing, (lyric) writing, performing, and marketing. If you also want to, you know…eat, breathe or sleep.
Anyway! As always, you live you learn. And I’m super excited to finally have my first solo record out into the world!
From now on when people at birthday parties ask me “Oh so you make music? Can I hear it somewhere?” I can finally say: YES, YES YOU CAN.
Because I finished something 💪
PS: 3 more days until it’s all over the interwebs!
